How to Create a Blog on Blogger (with Pictures)

Many Bloggers started their Blogging career using Google Blogger (Blogspot) which is absolutely free to use. And now you want to express your things to this mighty world through your writings without an initial investment then Blogspot is the best option for it.

 Even though there are several free blog providing services there including WordPress.com (different from Self Hosted WordPress. Websites), most prefers to start a free blog on Blogspot, because

•) It's safe and secure

•) Can also earn money from this 

•) It's Google's. 

You can also use a custom domain name if you didn't like using the blogger subdomain web address.

So in this blog post, I will be explaining "How to Start a Free Blog on Blogger" in a step by step manner.

What is Blogspot

Blogspot is a free blog publishing service developed by Pyra Labs and brought by Google in 2003 that allows users to publish blogs by hosting it and publishes them under their subdomain of .blogspot.com. 

Basically, it provides hosting to your blog and you can publish it for free under their subdomain (.Blogging.com) or you can use your custom domain name. 

How to Create a Free Blog on Blogspot

There are two steps in setting up a new Blogspot blog, which are

1. Blog Creation
2. Blog Setup

I will be explaining both steps with pictures in a step by step manner so that you guys can understand the process easier.

1. Blog Creation

Step 1 - Go to Google Blogger with your G-Mail (Google account), if you don't have one then create one it's free. (create Google account) and then select "Create your blog" as shown in Fig 1.

Step 2 -  For the first time user, you will have to select your Identity whether from Google Plus or you can create your new limited Blogspot profile. Once you confirmed what you want to be shown as then click "Continue to Blogger" as shown in Fig 2.

It will take you to your blogger profile. 

Step 3 - Your Blogger profile has been created now you have to create your blog from it. 
To create your blog, select "Create New Blog" from the page under the "Welcome" menu as shown in Fig 3.

Step 4 - In this step, you have to create your blog by providing a Title, Web address, and suitable theme as shown in Fig 4.

Like I said earlier, in blogger you can create a new blog but you can create it only under the .blogspot subdomain. 

For example, if you want to create "example.com" then in Google Blogger (Blogspot) you can create "example.blogspot.com". 

Tip: Create your blogger address related to your blog niche. 

For example, If your blog is about Cooking recipes then create your blog address as "(your brand name)cookingrecipes.blogspot.com" because it will be easy for users to understand what's your website is about and it also helps search engines to understand your blog. 

You can change the theme later. 

Step 5 - Now you have created your blog and your blogger profile will appear like Fig 5.

Step 6 - On the first time on the Blogger profile, you will be given an option to buy a Custom Domain from Google Domains as shown in Fig 6.

You can search and buy a domain from them but if you don't want any initial investments then I recommend you click "No Thanks". 

You can buy a custom domain for your Blogspot blog at any time and from any domain provider. 

Thus this is how to create a blog in Google Blogger (Blogspot). 

Now let's see about setting up the newly creates blog. 

2. Blog Setup

You have successfully created your blog, now it's time to set your blog on the right path by modifying some of your blogger settings.

1. Settings

Step 1 - Go to your blog profile and select "Settings" from the left navigation panel. 
In which you can find "Google Analytics Property ID" under the "Basic" menu as shown in Fig 7.

Enter your Google Analytics account ID in that box to get analyzed and to get that information about your whole blog from Google Analytics.

Step 2 - Under the "Privacy" menu, enable "Visible to search engines" as in Fig 8 to get your articles shown in SERPs.

Step 3 - Next you should enable "HTTPS redirect" as shown in Fig 9, it will make visitors always reach the encrypted version of your blog

HTTPS means Hypertext Transfer Protocol Safe.  
In most Self Hosting websites you have to buy an SSL certificate to show that your website/blog is safe but in Google Blogger it's free.

Step 4 - Change the time zone of your blog to your location, many people forget to do this and they get shocked when they find that their blog time is not as their location time. 

Under the "Formatting" menu you can find the "Time Zone" option as shown in Fig - 10, click on it. A dialogue box pops up and provides time zones of multiple locations, select your region and click "Save".

Step 5 - Scroll down and you will find the "Meta Tags" menu in which enable "Enable Search Description" as shown in Fig 11. 

Enable Meta Descriptions because they're very important to let know the viewers what your blog post is about in 150-60 characters. 
You have to learn to Create Good META Description every time because they encourage users to click on your blog posts when it appears on SERPs.

Step 6 - Under the "Crawlers and Indexing" menu you can find "Enable Custom robots.txt" and enable it as shown in Fig 12. 
Generate a Sitemap for your Blog and enter it in the "Custom robots.txt" dialogue box. 



Now link your blog with Google Search Console to know how your blog performance and acts in Google Search Engine. Once you generated your blog's sitemap now enter into your blog's GSC. 

You have to submit your website Sitemap into Google Search Console which helps Google to find your website faster and to crawl and index your website content easier. 

That's it, these are some important settings that you have to do on your new blog. 

2. Theme

The theme of a website is one of the important factors in pleasing readers.

Blogspot provides 12 default themes, they are

1. Contempo
2. Soho
3. Emporio
4. Notable
5. Essential
6. Simple
7. Dynamic Views
8. Picture Window
9. Awesome Inc.
10. Watermark
11. Ethereal
12. Travel

You can choose any one of those according to your taste from the "Theme" menu in the left navigation panel. 

You can also Install custom themes for your blog, so choose Adsense Friendly Blogger Template when you have an idea to monetize your website in the future. 

3. Layout

You have installed your theme so now it's time to Customize your Blogger Template.

You can customize your blogger template either by accessing to "Layout" menu from the left navigation panel of your blogger profile or by using the "Theme Designer" option from Theme<<Customize. 

These are some important settings you have to do when you create a new blog on Blogspot.

In my opinion, Blogspot (Google Blogger) is the best option to start your Blogging when you don't want to put any investment in it because,

• Not to worry about the security of your blog.
• It can also monetize your blog and earn money from it. 
• You can also use a custom theme. 

You can't earn from WordPress.com without upgrading your plan by paying for it but you can earn money from monetizing your Blogspot website once your eligible for it without paying a penny for it.
