How to add Meta Tags in Blogger (with Picture)

How to Add Meta Tags in Blogger Template

Understand that this method is for the website not for blog posts you write. The Meta Description for Blog posts is explained in the next subheading. 

Follow the below steps to enable the Meta Description tag for your website.

1. Log in to your Blogger account.



2. From the left navigation panel on the Homepage, select the Settings menu and then select "Basic" under that as shown in the below image.

3. Then on the main page of the Basic menu, you can see that options like "Title", "Description" and "Privacy". In the "Description" menu, click Edit.



4. It will open up a dialogue box in which you can write 500 words long description of your website as shown in the below image.

5. Once you wrote and saved the Meta description you can see that in search engines after some time.

How to Add Meta Tags in Blog Posts

In the following steps, you can learn to add meta description (Search Description) to your every blog post.

1. Log in to your Blogger account.



2. From the left navigation panel on your homepage, select Settings, and from which select the "Search Preference" menu as in the below image.

3. From the main page, under the Meta Tags, you can find the "Description" menu and select "Edit" as shown in the above image.



4. Once you select the Edit option, it will give the "Enable Search Description" option. Select Yes. 



5. When you select Yes, it will open a dialogue box where you can enter the description as shown in the following image. But don't write anything in that because what you write there are the default meta tags for all your blog posts.

   And if all your blog posts have the same meta description tags then search engines find that as "Duplicate Meta Tags" which is bad for your website and it's affecting your ranking.
   
   So select Yes, leave the dialogue box empty, and select "Save Changes".



6. Now you can find the "Search Description" option under "Post settings" for every blog post editor as shown in the below image.

7. When you click Search description, it will open a dialogue box under it and in it, you can write meta description tags for your blog posts as shown in the below image.

You can write long meta descriptions but generally, search engines cut it to roughly around 160 characters.

So it's best to keep all the important information about your blog post within 155 characters.

Why Bloggers should use Meta Descriptions

The importance of writing the meta description to your website and to your blog posts is that it lets people know what's your website and your blog posts are about and what they cover in general. 

For example, when I searched for my website on google, the result is shown like the below image.

From the above image, the meta description of my website clearly tells what my site is about.

And meta description for the blog post explains what's the article is about in a short manner to viewers which leads to clicking on your website. 

Importance of Meta Description 

• It helps users to click on your website/blog post.
• It provides a sneak peek about your blog post.
• It helps in increasing CTR (Clickthrough Rate)
• It helps in reducing Bounce Rate

What if Bloggers didn't use Meta Description

If you don't have a meta description for your website then users can't understand what's the niche of your website other than from your website name and its URL. 

If your blog posts don't have meta description then google and other searches pull some of the sentences from your article (mainly the starting sentence) and display them as Meta tags which may not help you in getting clicked by the users. 

It's okay, not to use meta description when your article covers several different main queries because your article may appear on SERP for different queries and when your article have a default META tag, it may appear the same for all other different queries, which may lead users to not click on your website.
